It gets less than three miles per gallon and can be operated only on the straightest and widest of roads, but it’s also a sizable piece of World War II history. Built by Pacific Car and Foundry, this M26 Pacific Armored Tank Transporter for sale on Hemmings.com was constructed to recover tanks from the battlefield, and to do so under hostile conditions. An armor-plated cab protected its seven-member crew. Powered by a 230-hp, 17.9-liter Hall-Scott straight-six, the M26 was used in conjunction with a Fruehauf-built M15 semi-trailer, the combination designated M25 and nicknamed the “Dragon Wagon.”

One of the few facts we know about this example is that it’s located in the southern French village of La Calmette, possibly not far from where it performed its last duties. (The second photo shows that there are at least two more in the same location.) Our hunch is that it’s one of scores of vehicles at the La Calmette Scrapyard, which, according to a blogger named Traveller Dave, is to be cleared out this year. With a curb weight of 21 tons, repatriating this vehicle would be an expensive undertaking indeed. The seller’s complete description:

Dragon Wagon or Pacific M26 created by Pacific Car foundry around 1940 for Second World War. This truck is complete and turn 15 years ago for special troubleshooting. I speak only French.
